Conversations I wish I could have, pt. 1

G: Hey, sugar.
Me: Granny? Oh my word, I can’t believe you’re calling me.
G: I just wanted to say a few things. Are you listening?
Me: Yes.
G: I want you to know that I’m proud of you, even if you didn’t go to college and you never held a job that paid more than $8 an hour. I’m proud of you and I want you to know this because I think you don’t think highly of yourself.
Me: You’re right, I don’t.
G: Well you should ’cause you’re a damn good mom, Angel. That little boy is amazing, you know? Amazing! You think he just came out like that, Angel? No, you taught him what he knows. You are a good mom.
Me: Thanks, Granny. That means a lot. I wish you were here.
G: Sometimes I do too, so that I could tell you how much I miss you and love you.
Me: I miss you more than you could ever know. There’s so much I want to share with you that I can’t. Like I wanted so bad to call you when Nick crawled the first time, and took his first step, and when he said “I love you” and knew what he was saying. I wanted to share with you all the funny things he’d say, ’cause I know you’d laugh and laugh and think he had just hung the moon. I am so sad that I can’t share this huge part of my life with you.
G: But I’m there. You can’t see me, no, but I’m there with you always. And I am damn proud that you are as strong and smart as you are, Angel. And I need you to know that I am sharing that with you. I see it all. And I do laugh… I laugh with you always.
Me: I really needed to hear that.
G: One more thing.
Me: Yes?
G: I do think he’s hung the moon. Oh, and happy 28th birthday.
Me: Thank you so much for calling me, Granny. I love you. See you later.

  1. Wow! That made me cry! So many of the things you want to say to your Granny are the exact things I want to say to my Mom. And you know what I bet if we could talk to them, they would say exactly what you wrote. Thanks for writing this. You are inspiring. Happy Early birthday!

  2. This made me cry. I miss my moma. When I was growing up I remember how I could not wait until I moved out and then I remember times that I would say my moma use to really get on my last nerve not ever truly truly meaning it but I actually would tell her this and she would laugh. Then I remember the times that we would laugh at crazy stuff and sing What a friend we have in Jesus on the phone. Thanksgiving is really really hard for me every year she would come over the day before Thanksgiving and stay all weekend. When she was able sometimes we even went shopping on the black Friday. Then one day she was gone and I couldn’t do or say things I wanted to say to her anymore like ask her if she thought I turned out to be a good mom. Or to say to her look moma I am a grandmother now too. What do you think about my budz? Ain’t he something. He loves to come to Gran’s and G-diddy’s. I know Granny was very proud of you Angel and so am I. You are a good mother and a very precious daughter I love you so much I want you to always remember that and I hope you have a great birthday! Love Moma
