oh boy.

At Ashlee’s baby shower, we all had to write out our advice about motherhood for Ashlee. As Ashlee has been a mother for almost 6 years now, I really had no good advice except to nap as often as possible– which is my go-to advice for all mothers of infants, as she will soon be. I know it saved my butt, all that napping.

I did however congratulate her on becoming the mother of a boy as I think it’s something worth a little bit extra celebration. Being a mother to a boy is probably the coolest thing in the world. I am sure I would love a daughter to play with as well as anything, but I think the bond between mother and son is surely something special and I always have, ever since watching my brothers grow up. Even still, they are exceptionally close to my ex-stepmom, their mother. I find that fascinating and heartwarming all at once.

Yes, my mom is one of my best friends. Yes, I enjoy shopping and hanging out with her. Yes, I love knowing she has been through almost everything I am still going through. Same sex relationships that are good are easy and natural, though. Almost expected! Really good relationships between opposite sexes- like father and daughter and mother and son? Special. And raising a boy that will grow into a man someday is surely something worth doing right.

A small son can charm himself into, and out of, most things.

Do not train boys to learning by force and harshness, but lead them by what amuses them, so that they may better discover the bent of their minds.
— Plato

Boys are beyond the range of anybody’s sure understanding, at least when they are between the ages of 18 months and 90 years.

A boy’s best friend is his mother.

If I have a monument in this world, it is my son.
— Maya Angelou

Something worth celebrating indeed.
